Research has shown that sustaining high performance is about much more than “having” characteristics or completing the appropriate “checklist” of requirements. It is about focusing on and maintaining ongoing action in three simple, yet critical areas. If you are looking for a quick fix or the silver bullet for sustaining high performance, reality informs us your search will be long and your success short-lived. If, on the other hand, you are willing to commit to balancing a fundamental set of principles, items that all too often lose out to competing priorities or ultimately compete against each-other and you are willing to be in constant action around these items, not simply look to achieve a desired end state, then the results are yours for the taking. It is not that we do not know these actions are important; it is that we forget again and again that they are dynamic, living needs in our organization’s life requiring constant care and effort. It is through continuous movement, a balancing act, that the sustaining of high performance is realized. It is a choice every leader can make each day in how you guide your organization forward to success.
